Local Union 25
Unions have played a pivotal role in creating a strong middle class, providing safe working conditions and allowing Americans to retire comfortably.
Before the Labor Relations Act was put into effect, making it legal for employees to organize into unions with collective bargaining rights, working life was dismal. Workers often put in more than 60 hours a week with no overtime pay, no paid vacations and no pensions.
There was no standard for safety measures and children as young as 12 toiled away in factories.
Because of the Labor Relations Act and the unions that fought for a 40-hour work week, safe working conditions and the end of child labor, union workers are now guaranteed:
- Fair wages
- Excellent retirement benefits
- Health benefits funded by their employer
- Access to nationwide job referrals
- Continuing education
- A voice in how the union is governed and jobsite rights
