Chet DeSmet appointed new Local 25 Quad Cities Business Agent
The union advantage is alive and well in the Quad Cities community. A strong union presence brings with it a number of benefits, including higher wages, benefits and retirement security; a safer, more productive workforce; and a unified voice for all workers on the job. Brother Chet DeSmet, newly appointed Quad Cities Business Agent, will serve Local 25 members in all these capacities and more as he continues to navigate the role formerly occupied by Bill Allison.
“I think we’re lucky in the Quad Cities to have such a strong labor workforce. Our community knows we’re their friends and neighbors, and they know we’re hard workers making a better life for our families,” DeSmet said. “As union members, we work to lift everyone up — not just ourselves.”
Brother DeSmet believes his previous work experience — both union and non-union — “gave me a good view of different working conditions,” he said. He joined the Local 25 apprenticeship program after being laid off from John Deere nearly eight years ago and hasn’t looked back since.
“It was the best decision I ever made,” he said.
His career began as a plumber apprentice, then he pursued an opportunity to change his card and work as an HVAC installer. After completing his apprenticeship, he stepped into the roles of foreman and general foreman, where he led successful teams and expanded his skills into sales, estimating and engineer work. He’s also been an active member of the PAC Committee and a delegate to the Quad City Federation of Labor.
Brother DeSmet is excited for the future of his new role with Local Union 25.
“We are confident that Chet possesses the knowledge, skills and dedication to represent the members of Local 25 with the same passion that Bill Allison demonstrated,” said Matt Lienen, Business Manager.
“I want to continue to push for more market share and believe working with people both inside and outside of our union will help accomplish that,” DeSmet continued. “Billy Allison laid the groundwork; it’s my job now to keep building upon it.”
