Instructor Highlight: Nate Jones
Nate Jones has been a proud member of Local 25 for a decade, but the trades have always been in his DNA. His grandfather, dad, two brothers and two uncles are also Local 25 members, and another uncle is a union electrician.
“Growing up in a family like that, I always knew I wanted to work with my hands and be part of something important,” Nate said. “The trades felt like the perfect fit for me.”
His interest sparked early on with welding, but he soon discovered pipefitting was the perfect way to blend those welding skills with problem-solving, precision and working with a wide range of materials and techniques. In the fall of 2024, Nate took on a new role as an instructor at the JATC, sharing the experience he’s gained throughout his career with apprentices. The classes he teaches include:
- Welding
- Math 1-4
- Drafting and Plan Reading
- Rigging and Signaling
- Tube Bending
- Gas Installations
- Iowa Mechanical Code
- Oxy-Fuel Torch Cutting
- Foreman Training
“For me, teaching isn’t just about the technical skills — it’s about helping apprentices grow and feel confident in what they do,” Nate said. “Watching them learn and succeed is one of the best parts of this role for me.”
Nate credits great mentors for teaching him not just how to do the work properly, but also the pride, safety and professionalism that come with being part of the union.
“The trades have been an important part of my life, and I can’t wait to see the next generation of apprentices grow and become skilled, proud tradespeople too,” he said.
