Annual Golf Outing Raises Funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley
On September 16, Local Union 25 members golfed for a good cause during our annual Golf Outing at Indian Bluff Golf Course in Milan. This year’s event raised $3,000 to identify new Big-Little matches and support existing Big-Little relationships at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley (BBBSMV). Tom McCune presented a check to Jay Justin, president and CEO of BBBSMV, during a recent Board of Directors meeting.
"We saw an opportunity through our golf tournament to partner with and impact a local youth organization," McCune said. "Big Brothers Big Sisters is a perfect fit for us, and we have enjoyed working with them on a number of different projects and programming over the years."
In addition to the golf tournament, Local 25 supports a variety of initiatives with BBBSMV. These include the sponsorship and creation of a miniature golf course hole at the organization’s annual Putt A Round, and participation in the BBBSMV Career Navigation Program, which educates Littles about careers opportunities in the trades. McCune also serves on the Board of Directors, and has been an integral part of the organization achieving the Gold Standard Award.
“Our vision is that all kids can achieve success in life, and success to us means that they graduate from high school with the ability to be self-sufficient with a sense of purpose in their life, a sense of community, those types of things,” Justin said. “That’s also the mission of organized labor, and I think that’s why we’ve been so closely aligned. Our philosophy and our belief system is that everyone has value and everyone can contribute to make our community better.”
